Mobile Public Library Closed on Thursday Due to Hurricane Francine

Due to deteriorating weather conditions related to Hurricane Francine, Mobile Public Library will be closing early at 6 P.M. on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, and will be closed on Thursday, September 12, 2024.  

The safety of our patrons and staff is our top priority, and we encourage everyone to stay informed and take appropriate precautions.

We expect to resume normal operating hours on Friday, September 13, 2024. Please check your news and social media channels for additional updates.

Library Maintenance Mechanic

The Mobile County Personnel Board is currently accepting online applications for LIBRARY MAINTENANCE MECHANIC on a continuous basis.

Once the Personnel Board creates the LIBRARY MAINTENANCE MECHANIC list, it will be valid for one year and Mobile Public Library will use the list throughout the year to fill vacancies.

Kind of Work

This is work involving responsibility for the general maintenance of all library buildings and equipment.

Examples of Work

(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Performs general maintenance on building mechanical equipment.

  • Completes work orders and all related paperwork.
  • Makes minor repairs on equipment as needed.
  • Makes minor repairs on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, electrical and other systems.
  • Runs conduits and extension cords for electrical wiring.
  • Replaces bulbs, fuses, ballasts and other electrical fixtures.
  • Contacts appropriate City agencies or private companies for complex repairs.
  • Maintains all library vehicles.
  • Requisitions materials and supplies.
  • Makes reports on the conditions of buildings, furnishings and equipment.
  • On call as the library’s after-hours emergency contact relating to library buildings, equipment and vehicles.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from a standard senior high school, or the successful completion of the General Educational Development (GED) test, related maintenance mechanical trade school course and a minimum of one year's experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of building, mechanical and automotive equipment; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to these requirements.

Essential Requirements of the Work

  • Some knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and automotive equipment.
  • Some knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in the building maintenance trade.
  • Some knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the maintenance of buildings and related facilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans and specifications.
  • Ability to estimate cost of materials and equipment for repairs.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to stoop, climb, crouch and kneel in order to inspect the facility, make repairs, ensure proper operations, and to perform regular maintenance. Work will involve some lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of objects and materials up to 50 pounds.

Special Requirement

Must possess a valid driver’s license from state of residence.

Distinguishing Features of the Work

An employee in this class performs a variety of moderately difficult maintenance and repair tasks on buildings, furnishings and equipment. Work is performed in accordance with an established routine under the general supervision of Library Management.
